My Story

My simple desire to make a kitchen rug in 1979 led me to a life devoted to art for the floor!

I found a piece of canvas in my studio and decided to paint a floorcloth for my kitchen. (A floorcloth is a painted canvas rug that can be used to cover a wood or tile floor and is cleaned with a damp mop.) Inspired by a magazine photo, that little rug took me on a journey. At first I sold a few here and there in antique shops, then I traveled to my first show. People started buying my work and before I knew it I was selling on Madison Avenue in NYC.

I took out an ad in a new magazine called Country Living and started building an audience. My clients began to spread across the U.S. Selling in NYC gave me the opportunity to make custom rugs for many famous clients including Carrie Fisher, Christina Ferrari, Michael Keaton, Paul Newman, Henry Winkler and others! My work started showing up in lots of shelter magazines and the publicity helped fuel the interest in floorcloths. Lots of people wanted to know how to make their own.

In 1996 I took a break from painting and wrote The Complete Book of Floorcloths. With a book in tow I became a guest on HGTV's DIY network reaching a national audience. My second book Painting Floorcloths grew out of my effort to simplify the process for workshops.

Somewhere on this journey Kathy Cooper became branded with floorcloths. I became widely known for painted rugs and artists from all over the world began to contact me with their questions or stories.

Over the years I have continued to look for ways to improve my rugs to meet the customer needs. In 2011 I created a line of printed floorcloths and added a non-skid padded backing to all of my rugs.

Today I am still having fun painting floorcloths. I love color, patterns, flowers and animals and I am known for my whimsical, happy, colorful style inspired from daily life. I want to infuse life with energy, spirit and enthusiasm!

I hope you get years of pleasure from your floorcloth purchase. Thank you for supporting my dream and being a part of my journey!
